i couldn't show you any other way.

I Couldn't Show You Any Other Way is an exploration of passive actions within the landscape. These are acts deemed unimportant by a productive-based society. Rolling, Searching, Watching, and Waiting;  these task based actions that address romanticism and longing. By extension this project touches on concepts of the sublime and what it means to be visible, to position oneself in the world, and even disappear into a surrounding.

In the video series I Couldn’t Show You Any Other Way, I enact simple gestures such as Walking, Waiting, Searching, and Rolling.

These actions are illogical and passiv. Passive defined as acts deemed undervalued by a productive based society. I am waiting for something to happen that never does, or rolling down a hill for no discernable reason. Embedded within these videos are small distress signals familiar to those who grew up with access to wilderness. These include a bright red emergency poncho and a flashing mirror, referencing the heliograph (a pocket-sized device used to catch the sun and signal that you are lost when hiking).

By extension this project touches on concepts of the sublime and what it means to be visible, to position oneself in the world, and even disappear into a surrounding.
